FRUGAL - WERKFILM
The script of the short film "Frugal", produced by ES.ARTE, won the SEMINCI Factory competition in 2021.
Directed by Juan Vicente Chuliá, "Frugal" is a mixture of suspense and film noir. The short film addresses the difficult social integration of foreigners from the perspective of Olya, a woman of Russian origin, played by actress Alba Frechilla.
In May 2021, I had the privilege of accompanying the Frugal film team in Valladolid and documenting their work during the recording of a 'making of' video. These days were unforgettable for me and make me very proud to have contributed to this project, which was an exquisite example of a fruitful collaboration between professionals.
Frugal premiered together with the 'making of' video at the 66th International Film Week (SEMINCI).
VIANA DE CEGA - BOOK
In 2021 I started working on a photo project documenting the cultural and tourist appeal of Viana de Cega - a village and popular resort in the province of Valladolid. My goal is to create a visually appealing book about Viana and its surroundings through images and short but sufficiently informative texts. A kind of visual compass that puts the beauty of the village at the center, half album, half book, to be given as a gift to family friends and official delegations alike. Viana de Cega is an atypical village that has slowly become an attractive place to live for all generations in recent decades. In fact, Viana de Cega is one of the few villages that, despite the unfortunate demographic development of Castile and León, has increased in population in recent decades due to numerous factors, namely its proximity to Valladolid, a developed infrastructure, available services and its intact nature dominated by the Cega River and pine forests.
©VALLADOLID - BOOK
The book ©Valladolid is the result of more than three years of work. For me it is an important milestone that has allowed me to contribute in a modest way to the promotion of Valladolid, a city that I have had the privilege of calling home for more than four years.
For me as a journalist, the architectural structure of the city is an eternal theme, a living laboratory of the urban environment, full of cultural traditions and natural features. In addition, I remember very well my first day in Valladolid, a sunny, hot afternoon in February. While exploring the city, I saw for the first time the Fabio Nelli Palace, the majestic interior of the Church of San Benito, the Plaza Mayor - the old main square of the city, and the magnificent residential buildings along Acera de Recoletos. That day I knew that I wanted to create a cultural project that would contribute to the promotion of the city.
For this reason, I tried to learn about the history of Valladolid. I visited every local museum and all the emblematic places in the city. I tried to get to know many locals, I wanted to learn their stories and traditions and at the same time document everything I saw. I took more than ten thousand photos, of which I selected about eight hundred for this book.
The book ©Valladolid presents more than 40 of the most important places in the city. Public buildings, museums, churches and convents, parks, squares and statues. Famous places that help to understand the history of Valladolid. The architectural heritage of Valladolid is like an open history book for me. For this reason, the book begins with my favorite Spanish saying: "If you want to know about history, you must know Valladolid."
When I published the book, I was clear that all periods of the city's architecture should be presented, from the Church of La Antigua and the Old Bridge (Puente Mayor) to the Science Museum and the modernist-style public buildings on Avenida de Salamanca.
Equally important for me was the presentation of the cultural and religious life of Valladolid, so the book also includes a chapter on Holy Week.
Since the book is primarily a visual work, I tried to write brief impressions. To complete the text I consulted Paz Altés Melgar several times, for which I would like to express my sincere gratitude.
In my opinion, it is almost impossible to interpret a city without its surroundings, so it was very important for me to present some emblematic towns around Valladolid that can be visited in a day. Famous places that undoubtedly contribute to the tourist value of Valladolid. Finally, you cannot separate the history of Valladolid from the General Archive of Simancas, the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara of Tordesillas or the castles in the hilly region of Montes Torozos, built in the architectural style that bears the name of our city. DISCOVER VALLADOLID - CULTURAL PROJECT (2018 -)
I started the Discover Valladolid project shortly after my arrival in Spain with the aim of promoting Valladolid's historical and cultural heritage. I regularly published many of my photographs on Discover Valladolid's social media platforms, but my work did not end there. Through a series of reports, I tried to get to know the people of the city and the province. I conducted dozens of interviews, most of which I published in 10-15 minute videos to show the different aspects of the city and its people.
Through these interviews, I got to know an ambitious and proud city, where tradition and development coexist, and where - unlike many other places - the city's own character has been preserved.
I am very grateful for all these personal stories. One of the first interviews I shot was in front of the famous house 'Casa Mantilla'. The protagonist was Virginia Oñate. Her grandfather lived in this house in the first half of the 20th century and with his photographs he documented everyday life in Valladolid.
In Urueña I met the singer, musician and ethnographer Joaquín Diaz, who one day showed me his foundation and its collection.
I also thank Gilles Philippe Guzzi, the owner of the boat ‘La Leyenda del Pisuerga’, who one day accompanied me on his boat and showed me the river from different sides.
It was a great honor to film in the Convent of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, where Sister Esther showed me her baked goods and talked about the life of the nuns in the convent. This report was particularly successful, it was featured in various media and generated almost 50,000 views on YouTube alone.
In my work I met the artists Andrés Trillo and Ana Nan, who installed an artistic project in Teresa Gil Street as part of the joint exhibition project CreaVa.
I have covered Holy Week and the brotherhoods of Valladolid, the India House (Casa de la India), the potters of Portillo, the farmers of Tudela de Duero and the award-winning chefs of Bar Puerto Chico.
All my previous reports on Valladolid and the surrounding area have been self-funded and can be found on the Discover Valladolid YouTube channel.
RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BERLIN CITY PALACE - RESEARCH PROJECT (2015-16)
As a journalist, I have always been very interested in the topics of cultural heritage, architecture, urban planning and history. These interests led me to the Free University of Berlin in Germany in 2015. As a researcher on the "European Journalism Fellowships" scholarship, I devoted myself to an urban project that examined the political and social aspects of the reconstruction of the Berlin Royal Palace. That same year, I conducted interviews with architects, politicians and citizens about this very controversial reconstruction, which was inaugurated in 2021, despite very different points of view. I hope to be able to continue this project in the future - now with the new experiences of Berliners towards their new palace, which is now called the Humboldt Forum.
