FRUGAL - 'MAKING OF'
The short film Frugal, a production by the ES.ARTE production company, was awarded at the Seminci Factory of the Valladolid International Film Week, in its 2020 edition. Directed by the filmmaker Juan Vicente Chuliá, "Frugal" moves between suspense and film noir, and addresses the difficult social integration of foreign immigration through Olya, an immigrant of Russian origin, played by the actress Alba Frechilla.
In May 2020 I was lucky enough to be able to accompany the team on the filming of Frugal in Valladolid, documenting their work and collaborating in the recording of the different scenes, which I later captured in the 'making of'. Those days represented an unforgettable experience for me, and I am very proud to have witnessed the development of this exceptional project, as an example of a more than profitable cooperation between professionals.
Both Frugal and its 'making of' premiered at the 66th edition of Seminci.
VIANA DE CEGA - BOOK
During 2021 I started working on a photography project, documenting Viana de Cega, the summer resort town near Valladolid.
My goal was to create, through images and short, yet informative texts, a visually appealing book about Viana de Cega and its surroundings. A charming book, as well as a visual guide, that concentrates all the beauty of the place and that can be presented equally both in a family context and in more official and representative environments.
Viana de Cega is an atypical town that, over the last few decades, has become a pleasant town to live in for all generations. Indeed, Viana de Cega is one of the few towns that, despite the sad demographic evolution of Castile, has gained population in recent decades thanks to numerous factors: proximity to Valladolid, a developed infrastructure, an advanced network of services, and intact nature articulated by pine forests and the Cega River.
©VALLADOLID - BOOK
The book on Valladolid is the result of more than three years of work. For me it has been an important milestone in my career, hoping to have contributed to the promotion of the city that I have considered my home for more than four years now.
For me as a journalist, the city is a permanent theme, a living laboratory formed by the urban environment, cultural traditions and natural conditions.
I clearly remember my first day in Valladolid, on a sunny and warm afternoon for a February. Walking through the city I discovered the Fabio Nelli Palace for the first time, as well as the majestic interior of the church of San Benito; the architectural complex of the Plaza Mayor or the magnificent houses of the Acera de Recoletos. That day I already knew that I would want to launch a cultural project, which would help promote the cultural dissemination of this city with so much history. For this reason, from the moment I arrived in Valladolid in 2017, I tried to study it thoroughly. I visited all its museums and the most emblematic places in the city, trying, at the same time, to get in touch with its residents and their traditions, and documenting in depth everything I saw. I took more than ten thousand photographs, of which I have chosen about eight hundred for this book.
The book ©Valladolid presents more than 40 of the most emblematic places in the city. Places that help understand the history of the city. Public buildings, museums, churches and monasteries, parks, squares and statues. Valladolid's architectural heritage is an open book of history. For this reason, this book also begins with my favorite saying: “If you want to know about history, you must know Valladolid.”
When editing the book, I was clear that I had to present all the architectural periods of the city, from La Antigua and the Puente Mayor to the Museum of Science or the contemporary public buildings on Avenida de Salamanca. Also, the cultural and religious life of Valladolid, so important. For this reason, the book presents an exclusive chapter dedicated to Holy Week.
Since the book is primarily a visual work, it is composed of short, but sufficiently informative descriptions. For the perfection of the text I regularly consulted Paz Altés, to whom I would like to express my most sincere gratitude.
In my opinion, it is almost impossible to interpret a city without its surroundings, so it is essential to present some representative towns around Valladolid, and that can even be visited in a day. These iconic tourist places add enormous value to Valladolid. After all, one cannot separate the history of Valladolid from the General Archive of Simancas, the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara de Tordesillas, or the castles of the Montes Torozos, whose architectural style bears the very name of our city.
DISCOVER VALLADOLID - CULTURAL PROJECT (2018 -)
I started the Discover Valladolid project shortly after my arrival in Spain, with the aim of promoting the historical and cultural heritage of Valladolid. Some of my photographs were regularly published on social media under the brand “Discover Valladolid”. But my work did not end there. Over the last few years, through a series of reports and interviews, I got to know many people from the city and the province. In my work I made dozens of reports and videos, each lasting between 10 and 15 minutes, in which I tried to reflect the idiosyncrasy of the city. In short, I got to know an ambitious and proud city, where tradition coexists with development, and where – unlike many other cities – a unique character is preserved.
I am grateful for the trust placed in me for sharing many personal stories with me. One of the first interviews took place in front of Casa Mantilla. The protagonist was Virginia Oñate, whose grandfather lived in the house and who, with her photographs, documented the daily life of Valladolid during the first decades of the 20th century.
I came into contact with Joaquín Diaz in Urueña, who showed me his foundation and his collection.
I also thank the owner of the boat of the Legend of the Pisuerga, Gilles Philippe Guzzi, who, for a day, accompanied me on his boat and allowed me to see the river from different angles.
It was a great honor to be able to film in the Monastery of Santa Isabel de Hungría, where Sister Esther, while showing me her baking, told me about the life of the nuns in the monastery. This report was especially successful, it was presented in various media and uploaded to social networks, and generated 45 thousand views on YouTube alone.
In my work I got to know the artists Andrés Trillo and Ana Nan. Within the framework of the CreaVa collective exhibition project, they left their artistic mark on Teresa Gil Street.
Lastly, I made reports on Holy Week and the brotherhoods of Valladolid; the Casa de la India; the potters of Portillo; the farmers of Tudela de Duero; or the cooks of the Bar Puerto chico, who were the winners of the Pincho de Oro awards in several editions.
All the reports I have made so far about Valladolid and its surroundings were self-financed and are available on the Discover Valladolid YouTube channel.
RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BERLIN PALACE - RESEARCH PROJECT (2015-16)
As a journalist, I have always had a special interest in the topics of heritage, architecture, urban planning, and history. These concerns led me in 2015 to the Free University of Berlin in Germany, where, as a researcher with a grant from the ‘European Journalist Fellowships’ programme (Europäische Journalisten-Fellowships), I dedicated my efforts to a major urban planning project, investigating the political and social aspects of the reconstruction of the Berlin Royal Palace. During that year I conducted interviews with architects, politicians and citizens in general. This reconstruction was very controversial, and, despite the conflicting opinions on the matter, it was finally inaugurated in 2021. I hope that, in the near future, I will be able to continue with this research project, analysing the opinion of Berliners after the completion of their Royal Palace, now called the Humboldt Forum.
